Teacher Ben Holt will utilize a range of classical Jazz songs

to guide students in conventions and enhance improvisational skills.

Explore diverse Jazz genres while refining group play, listening,

communication, accompaniment, jazz rhythm, and swing.

Jazz is a social music. It’s about interacting with other musicians. Jamming, improvising, and supporting one another to create creative music together. 

To do this effectively jazz musicians rely on certain conventions that allow them to quickly connect and begin to create unique improvisations immediately. Musicians who understand these conventions can go to any city in the world, fit in with the local jazz scene and create fresh, exciting, improvised music without sheet music, rehearsals, or even the ability to speak the same language!

In this 8-week course, we will use simple jazz tunes as vehicles to learn these conventions and develop the skillset to improvise within them. 

Our primary area of focus will be playing together as a group. This includes: listening, communication, accompaniment, jazz rhythm, and swing. 

Our secondary focus will be improvisation, jazz theory, and jazz history.

What will you gain from this class?

Students will come away from this class with 8 new songs to add to their jazz repertoire and a much greater understanding and ability to play jazz in a group setting. Students will be more prepared to go out and participate in local jazz jam sessions and have the skills to begin forming their own jazz groups and jam sessions.

Prerequisites:

Welcome All Instruments, Jazz Enthusiasts, and Stage Performers!

Basic knowledge of music theory is recommended but not required.
